In 2015 when the World Health Organization commissioned the Lancet to perform an analysis called “Global Surgery 2030”. The commission found that there are 5 billion people in the world without access to safe and affordable surgical care and anesthesia. It was estimated that this lack of access would cause $21 trillion of lost productivity between 2015 and 2030 without ‘urgent and accelerated investment in surgery’. The greatest area of need was found to be in sub-Saharan Africa.
